Assemblyman steps down due to sexual harassment claims

Nobody wants to deal with sexual harassment in the workplace, however, this is a common problem throughout the United States.

Recently, a Buffalo-area Assemblyman announced that he was removing himself from the Legislature as a result of sexual harassment complaints made by women who worked in the same office.

According to the Assemblyman, he decided to step down because the impact of the complaints were beginning to negatively affect his family as well as the Assembly. That being said, he continues to deny that he ever made requests or had sexual contact with any member of his staff. Furthermore, he claims that he never intended to create a work environment that could be deemed hostile.

The Assemblyman has been quoted as saying, “There was mutual banter and exchanges that took place that should not have taken place because it is inappropriate in the workplace even if it does not constitute sexual harassment.”

Six women who worked for the man in the past as well as one current employee have filed court papers accusing him of making unwanted advances and using sexual language.

This is another example of a person in power thinking they can do whatever they want, including crossing the line into the territory of sexual harassment. As a result of his actions, he was forced to step down from his position.

While this case is unfolding in Buffalo, the same types of situations have come up in the past, including in Indiana. An employment law attorney has the knowledge and experience necessary to help anybody who has been a victim of sexual harassment at the workplace.
