What should you do if you lose your job?

Being fired is an awful experience, particularly if you did nothing wrong. Working in an employment-at-will state such as Indiana means you are constantly at risk of dismissal, for almost any reason, or no reason at all. However, as we have discussed in a previous post about unfair dismissal, there are certain reasons for which you cannot legally be fired.

If you feel your position has been illegally terminated, you might consider making a claim against your former employer. It is even possible that you may have your position reinstated. However, there is no guarantee and in the meantime you still need to be able to support yourself and your family.

As this article on handling job loss suggests, there are several steps you can take to help yourself through this difficult time. You may be able to find some part-time work, or even consider starting up a business of your own. Now is also a good time to refresh your resume so you are ready to start job-hunting again.

Managing your finances during this time is also important. You may need to cut back on expenditure and it is sensible to call any creditors you are indebted to in order to explain your situation and arrange to temporarily suspend your payments. Meanwhile, ensure that you have received any severance pay or final compensation from your former employer. You may also be able to claim unemployment compensation.

Starting again in this manner can be difficult, but you are certainly not alone. Furthermore, if you seek to challenge your employer for your unfair dismissal, you may find that an attorney can be of use. He or she can support you in your claim and may be able to advise you on how best to proceed.
