Many disabled workers face discrimination simply when attempting to find suitable employment. What some employers ignorant to the law may not realize is that, according to the Americans with Disabilities Act, employers have no right to discriminate against disabled individuals. Beyond that, they are absolutely required to provide reasonable accommodations for employees with disabilities. Fortunately, on the other side of things, there are employers who do not hesitate to add disabled but hardworking employees to their workforce.
In Indiana, where Disability Awareness Month was celebrated in March, a small children’s clothing store owner employs an autistic man as one of her 19 employees. Even though the employee can have a difficult time communicating with other people because of his autism, his disability did not hinder him from going to school and becoming a valued worker. Today, this individual has been on the job for almost 10 years, not just contributing his skills but also bringing joy to his colleagues.
According to a training specialist in Indiana, people with disabilities should be given a chance without the constant threat of disability discrimination. Skills, interests and strengths can be matched to the needs of particular employers, creating a win-win situation for both parties.
While the initiative of proactive business owners in Indiana is certainly commendable, it is still an unfortunate fact that many people face discrimination because of their disabilities. Disability discrimination should never be tolerated inside or outside of the workplace. If you experience workplace discrimination because of a disability, you should know that you can protect your rights by pursuing employment litigation against your employer.
