Lawsuit involving sexual harassment in the workplace settled

Being a victim of sexual harassment in Indiana can be demeaning for a worker. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for supervisors to abuse their power by sexually harassing their subordinates. Three women in one out-of-state case claimed that they experienced sexual harassment in the workplace at a Red Lobster restaurant and thus filed a lawsuit, which was recently settled for $160,000.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reached the settlement in the suit against the restaurant, where a manager was accused of harassing three women who worked there. Besides touching the women inappropriately, the manager also purportedly made regular remarks deemed to be sexually offensive. This is a violation of the United States' Civil Rights Act of 1964.

As part of the settlement, the restaurant not only has to pay $160,000 to the women, but it must also train its employees on complying with the nation's anti-discrimination laws. The establishment said it has since terminated the manager who incurred the sexual harassment charges. According to officials, the company takes these types of allegations seriously and values a diverse workplace.

Employers in Indiana are legally obligated to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace, as this may lead to a hostile or intimidating work environment. When this fails to happen, an employer may be held liable through the civil court system. Anybody who is subject to sexual harassment has the right to file a harassment claim against the company, with possible remedies in a victoriously litigated suit including monetary damages as well as related legal relief.
